A Guide to the Good Life

Guide to the Good Life provides an easily accessible and practical-minded introduction to the ancient philosophy of life known as Stoicism.  Since its publication in 2008, the book has had a significant impact on the lives of many readers.

Desire.jpg

On Desire

Throughout human history and across cultures, people have thought the road to happiness is to get what we want.  On Desire follows the lead of those philosophers, religious thinkers, and modern psychologists who have argued to the contrary, that happiness is impossible unless we learn how to control our desires.

You.jpg

You: A Natural History

In You: A Natural History, I describe the remarkable events that had to take place in order for you to exist.  Stars and planets had to form, life had to arise, your species had to evolve, and your parents had to meet.  Yes, it is science, but humanistic science, written with general readers in mind.

Slap.jpg

A Slap in the Face

One of the principal obstacles to our tranquility is the insults, both blatant and subtle, that others direct our way.  In this book I examine the advice given by Stoic philosophers, psychologists, and others on how to shrug off these insults.

Aha.jpg

Aha!

In Aha! I explore the role that insights have had in human history and share the advice that psychologists and others have given on how we can increase our chances of experiencing them in our own lives.

With Two Oars

When I am awake but not writing or teaching, there is a very good chance that I am rowing.  I do it not just as a form of recreation and exercise, but as part of my Stoic practice.  For a decade I was a rowing coach, and wrote this book in conjunction with that activity.

Musonius.jpg

Musonius Rufus

I didn't write this book; Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus did—or rather, his student Lucius did.  Nor did I translate the words in this book; my colleague Cynthia King did.  I am listing it here because of the role I played in editing and publishing the work.  Also, it is a must-read for any modern Stoic.
